Wow, that's so beautifully done! It looks so alive- most of the textbook drawings are so flat. I particularly like the shading around the head and gills- very 3D! It was a good idea to add the orange.
I get it from Craig Cooley. He used to have his own studio, as Abstract Tribal Tattoo (Googling on that will get you his contact info). He's currently working out of Porcupine Tattoo, 157 Rivington (F to Delancey, then slightly north and east), but said he's going to be moving to Brooklyn in November.
I don't know that much about tattoos. Wil it always be this vivid and detailed, or do modern tattoos still fade and smudge as they heal?
Either way, congratulations on getting something done that obviously means a lot to you. Is the timing (a change to your body close to Rosh Hashanah/Yom Kippur, to begin the year) coincidental or intended?
It won't be quite this vivid once it's healed, but it will be close to it: fading is not inherent, with decent care, a combination of not scratching while it's healing, and protecting it from the sun.
Not a new year's thing, no.
The timing had to do with finding the right image; having a bit of money again; and working around planned travel.

Do you know the Shriekback song "Coelocanth" from about 20 years ago now? (Shriekback was a spin off from The Gang of Four)
I'm so suggestible that just seeing your picture will have the song playing in my head for the next couple of days.
