We saw Elaine Strich At Liberty this evening. An excellent show, if you're interested in the theatre as a (sub)culture and/or history of the musical theatre: Strich talks about her life and career, and sings. She sings Coward, and Sondheim, and other good stuff.
Then our group (almost all) went out for dinner, the sort of tasty Chinese meal where everyone is pleasantly surprised at how little they've spent. It was midtown, so we paid $13 each, including tax and tip--for dumplings and lots of other good food, as much as we had room for.
And thence to our respective homes. Andy and I rode uptown with someone named Howard, a friend of Lise's we hadn't met before. We were talking, idly, about this and that, unemployment insurance and travel and computers, and I mentioned Panix. At which point the complete stranger sitting next to Howard said something about Alexis being cool. Turns out he'd been a Panixista since Panix was one machine. Soon he and his boyfriend and Andy and I were all helping Howard figure out what to do with a possibly defective reel-to-reel tape player--if the player isn't defective, then the tapes need (expensive) rescue work. All very friendly and straightforward, and we didn't bother exchanging names. The subway roof may not constitute an introduction, but my ISP seems to.
