I'm buying some holiday cards from [livejournal.com profile] joedecker and wanted to use Paypal to pay for them.

I tried to log on to my Paypal account, and it insisted on sending me to the "I forgot my password" page no matter how many times I entered my existing password. So I went through that rigamarole, and was asked to reset my password. It wouldn't accept the previous password because it recognized it as my old password, after refusing to recognize it when I tried to use it to log in.

The right hand knoweth not what the right hand is doing.

Sounds like they're forcing you to set a new password, by voiding your old one and refusing to allow you to re-use it. I can sympathise with the reasoning, but they should tell you that's what they're doing.

I hate PayPal with a deep and abiding loathing.

Ugh. The exact same thing happened to me today (with a bit of additional annoyance from pages not working properly in Mozilla and forcing me to use IE, which I hate even more when financial transactions are involved than I do generally). I share your irritation.

PayPal forced me to choose a new password the other day, too. Nice to know it's not just me. (The balance was correct, or I would have worried more.)

I had to reset my paypal password a few days ago, too. I wonder if their security has been compromised.

Ditto, ditto. It's time I came up with a new top-level password anyway.
