I've just had my second encounter today with someone whose name I couldn't remember.

The first was in the hallway while waiting for my doctor's office to open--an ex-neighbor who now lives in that building and greeted me with "Hey, Inwood girl." I suspect we never knew each other's names.

The second was just now, coming back from the office cafeteria. He said "Vicki" in tones of surprise. It was one of the people who used to do freelance proofreading for Computing Reviews, when I was working there. We chatted a bit, and he wished me well here; I'd forgotten that he'd been working for McGraw-Hill one day a week for a very long time. I checked the address book in my PDA, and it reminded me that his name is Lester.

when my dad was in the hospital, he got a husband and wife team of visitors. my sister and i were there, and we cordially greeted them, walked them through my dad's condition, asked them how things were with them, updated them on our lives, all that fun stuff. after a bit, they left.

i turned to my sister and said "do you have any idea who those people were?"

she said "nope. no idea."

the nurse who had been in the room the whole time busted out laughing. she said that it quite seemed like we knew who we were talking to.

we did figure out that they were some of my dad's coworkers, but even now i am not sure which ones.
