If that offer of making a bird userpic still stands, here's what I'm thinking would be nice:

• A hawk in flight against a blue sky, with the text "Bright the hawk's flight on the empty sky"


• A cardinal in flight (there are lots of cardinal pictures online, but they all seem to be perched) or


• an egret or a black-crowned night heron either flying overhead or just taking off.

All three is probably excessive, but the hawk and one of the others might be nice.

You could also consider a Japanese crane, since they've got a black-and-white egret/heron look going, with a bright red patch on the crown of the head.

Also scarlet tanagers.
