It appears that I no longer like M&M's. I'm tempted to blame it on the new colors, but I think it's me.

I suspect that I won't like the tootsie rolls I snagged from the same office party.

On the other hand, the home-baked brownies were just fine: it's not chocolate that's the problem, nor sweets.

Two signs of increasing age are that I have the new categories Too Sweet and Too Salty.

A couple years ago the combination of sweet+fat suddenly started tasting really off to me, like I was eating wax or something. Things like cookie dough, ice cream, or even chocolate, that I could normally eat all day long, just tasted wrong, though sweet things without fat or non-sweet things with fat were fine. This wore off in a week or so but was rather strange.

It's possible that M$Ms have gone downhill (I'd swear they had more flavor when I was a kid, though not all that much even then) or just that access to really good chocolate makes mediocre chocolate not worth eating. Neither of these have anything to do with maturity except in the sense that if you've been around longer, there's more chance that things will change.

I haven't tried the new colors because I realized several years ago that M&Ms have at best mediocre chocolate. Really, they have mostly sugar and just a little chocolate flavoring. I'm pretty sure the turning point for me was eating a lot more good quality chocolate so that I had a standard for comparison. I'll still eat some at a party, but I don't buy them for myself like I did when I ate them to fuel all-nighters in college.
