I don't go to the gym to impress people, but I don't mind doing so occasionally. When it's my sweeties being pleased with my muscles, I am definitely pleased.
When I was ready to do my leg presses last night, there were three women standing near the machine I wanted, and one was sort of leaning on it. I asked whether they were using it (a polite way of saying "I'd like you to move if not") and they said no. One of them proceeded to use the equipment next to it (a thing people lean way over on, and do stretches and lifts, sometimes holding weights) and the other two stayed nearby. They were watching me, a bit, and seemed impressed as I started carrying the 45-pound weight plates to load onto the leg press. I may have been misreading them, of course: but it seemed they were noticing my ability to carry those plates without visible stress--which I wasn't able to when I started working out--as much as the amount of weight I was putting on the machine.
My mother mentioned on the phone that she'd been with my aunt to her exercise class, and lifted what she called "little three-pound weights…not like you're doing." So I told her that when she'd been doing it for five years, she would be. We discussed exercise a bit, and she said she wanted to consult someone about whether weight-lifting was a good idea for her. I agreed that that's a good idea, and added that if she really doesn't like weights, swimming or walking are also good. (Yes, a person can do multiple exercises, but that's a separate topic.)
Last night's numbers:
Cardio, 20:22, top heart rate 138 (I set it to the default 20-minute time, the extra seconds are "cool-down" provided automatically at a lower resistance)
Calf machine: 75 pounds, 3 sets of 13
Leg press: 230 pounds, 2 sets of 12
Leg curl: 95 pounds, 2 sets of 12; 85 pounds, 12
Triceps pulldown: 40 pounds, 2 sets of 15
Crunches, 2 sets of 20
Back arches: 3. My shoulder complained quickly, so I stopped.
The first two of my rotator cuff exercises, 7 each. I did the third at home, where there was a doorway not otherwise in use.
Yoga tree: 4 sets of {2 on each leg}
Bicep curls: 30-pound bar, 3 sets of 15
Lateral raise, left arm only: 5 pounds, 15 simple, 15 of the full out-in-down.
