I woke up around 7 this morning, coughing a bit, and got out of bed to avoid waking
cattitude. I played with the computer a bit. No coughing. Still sleepy, so I went and lay back down, whereupon I almost immediately sneezed and then coughed again.
Hence, I am up, I have had tea, and I would like to know why I'm only coughing when I lie down. (The cough syrup I have is a combination cough suppressant and expectorant, which might or might not have helped, had I thought of it at the time.)
I can nap later, when Cattitude isn't trying to sleep.

Could be allergens in the bed/bedding (very very VERY common). There are sprays and treatments for mattresses and bedding that help a lot.
And of course one of the reasons for coughing is when something in the lungs triggers a response to try to clear it out, and when you lie down, fluid and gunge in the lungs will move around and may hit some trigger point (again, quite common)

I've been told that it's gravity. The stuff that makes you cough stays down when you're sitting or standing, but rises when you're lying down.
That phenomenon is common with GERD, which I, and many of my friends, have dealt with.
Get well soon.
