The hawk is still hanging out in the (now-bare) elm tree, and when we went to take a look at her yesterday, a falcon was in the tree as well. Not a stable situation--and sure enough, the falcon took off after a moment, and went to another tree, still along the water, where we got a long look at him before the crow patrol showed up and chased him away.
I also got some more bulbs planted, taking advantage of a (relatively) warm afternoon. These are very much a gamble--they're in spots where nothing has been grown for a couple of years, and some are behind a hedge and may not be seen even if they do grow. But there are worms in the soil, and even a bit of sunlight, and I want to get the bulbs in the ground, and can't plant them under the tree where the snapdragons are, because the snapdragons are still in flower. A very weird, warm, dry November. I'm hoping the snapdragons will set seed, but will probably go buy more next summer in any case.
Thanksgiving dinner was just the two of us--and the cat, who is always happy to help with fresh-cooked poultry. The pie project was abandoned when the flour turned out to have bugs in it, and so did the bag of replacement flour purchased downstairs. But we had a roast duck with a plum glaze--which is just the right size for two people, and now there's duck broth in the near future; sweet potatoes, mashed with lots of butter and some nutmeg; and a cucumber salad, because I wanted something green and cucumber salad is appropriate for any occasion. And no dessert, because we were too stuffed with bird and sweet potatoes to bother opening the nice lemon cookies. So it may be just as well we didn't have a pie. Cozy and well-fed, at home with my best beloved.
