I am glad the people on my friends list post about finals, and deadlines for term papers, and lunatics careening past their dorm room doors in shopping carts.

It helps me remember that going back to school would not all be a bliss of reading and learning and intense discussion, as it can so easily seem when people talk about the good bits, the books and languages and joy.

Posting on Finals

I am more than willing to regale you with tales about the horrors of graduate school....after Finals are over. :) I knew grad school would be work, but this is fairly awful at times. Oh well.

I loved the academic environment, but I got very tired of the academic pressure system after 17 consecutive years of school-going. Work has its own pressures, but there are rarely closed-book tests.

I always wound up way behind on the required skittles.

A week ago I almost wrote an entry with "Life sucks" for the subject, and "Can you tell I work in an academic library and it's December?" for the message, but somehow I never quite got around to it. There's nothing like spending a decade working for a university to shatter such illusions. How many days till the semester's over?

Though I must say, I can't imagine being happy with any other job. I have easy access to a ton of great books and I love meeting people who love their research. Sadly, not everyone in a university is like that.
