It's been a good birthday.

I started by sleeping late, and had chocolate birthday cake for breakfast. (Andy brought some home from gaming Thursday night--this was homemade birthday cake, complete with strawberry frosting, for his and another player's birthday, but there was enough left for me to have on my birthday.)

I have a brand new dictionary, with a whole new set of weird two-letter words and Q words without U's for the purposes of Scrabble. That, and the Onion's Our Dumb Century, are Andy's birthday gift. My mother's birthday card included a check with a note: she's buying me the new hard drive that I picked up when we went out together a few days ago.

But most of all, I got the best birthday weather in my entire life. Not only was it warm and sunny, but it's been warm enough steadily enough that there's still lots of green on the trees, along with all the pretty reds and yellows and oranges. A few jewelweed flowers left, and some purple asters up in the high meadow; chickadees and woodpeckers; and mostly just a long walk in the hills, and the incredible blue sky, and the grass still green and the clover blooming under the yellow maple trees. An autumn like I've never seen, a true pleasure, the autumnal smell of leaf mold floating through warm air. A remarkably gentle November, at least for New York.

Andy took me out to a French bistro, for a nice dinner, duck and garlic roast potatoes, then chocolate mousse to end the day as it began. And we talked about how nice our long walk in the hills had been.

I'd say this weather can't last, but I didn't think it would last this long. Carpe diem, indeed.

I bought the Onion's Dumb Century book for Richard, whose birthday it was the day before yours. He had a good birthday - glad you did too!
