Birds: on the way home from work, I gave the conductor my ticket to punch, and then got up and stepped around her to look out the window as we approached the marsh just west of Douglaston station [1]. As I was looking for the ospreys--and saw three sitting on the nest as we passed--she mentioned that that view is the high point of her day.
A couple of days ago, I got into a conversation about gardens and produce with a co-worker, sparked by the person who'd brought in their extra basil, jalapeños, parsley, and tomatoes. This morning, she presented me with a bag from her garden: tomatoes (Roma and cherry), long green peppers (mild, I think these are the ones
nancylebov was just posting about, and two kinds of cucumbers. No, not kirbys: the ones I think of as "regular" cucumbers, the basic big green ones, and some small yellow ones called lemon cucumbers for their appearance. I ate the cherry tomatoes as part of lunch, because they clearly wouldn't keep; some of the Romas and one big cucumber were a salad tonight with the remainder of
cattitude's fine split pea soup; I peeled and sliced one of the lemon cucumbers, which tastes just like the regular kind, and this one had lots of seeds and pulp, which I like.
I went to the gym after work. It is very pleasant to be greeted by one of the trainers with the words "Here comes the star."
I couldn't get a cardio bike I liked, so did a minimal five-minute warmup; I'd had a nice walk at lunchtime, up and around at a good pace, so I have gotten cardio exercise. I did the Xpressline, basically the same as last time. Had to remind the trainer that we'd added ten pounds to the leg press on Monday, because he hadn't written it down. And then borrowed his pencil, when I was all done, because he'd again not recorded the increase. 12s on everything except the overhead press, where I lost my groove in asking the trainer to stop someone from jumping onto the next machine and messing up my settings; 11 on that. The leg extension was in bits with short rests in between, not a smooth 12 (more like 5, 2, 3, 2), but it was 12. And yes, I am pausing at the top on the leg press, as the trainer (not Elliott) asked on Monday after I added ten pounds and still did 12 reps.
In chart form:
Seated leg press, 370 pounds, 12.
Leg extension, 80 pounds, 12.
Leg curl, 110 pounds, 12.
Lat pulldown, 105 pounds, 12.
Overhead press, 50 pounds, 11
Vertical chest press, 55 pounds, 12.
Biceps, 45 pounds, 12
Triceps, 50 pounds, 12
Then I did one set of 20 crunches, and about 7 back arches, before I decided that it hurt enough to stop. I'd almost abandoned the entire gym project somewhere on the train, because of menstrual cramps, so I didn't especially expect to do abdominal exercises.
Stretches.
