I bought bulbs a few days ago: crocus, mostly, and some daffodil and tulip. Enough, I think, for the spaces around the trees in front of our building, and the building's little front garden. Maybe a few extras to drop into the park.
Now it turns out I need to wait on the spots under those trees: the flowers have come back. I'd put in some tiny purple flowers under one tree, back in July, along with marigolds. Went away, no rain for two weeks, and came back to find only a bit of scraggly greenery. Green being better than bare earth, I left it when I planted a couple of other things. Those other things have finished flowering, but in the meantime, the tiny purple flowers seem to have settled in and are blooming again. Subtle, but green and purple and to be treated with care.
Similarly, the snapdragons under the other tree--a bargain in the first place, picked up at the Queens Botanical Garden flower shop when they were trying to clear out the remaining annuals--are showing new flower buds. A few more warm days, and this should be very cheerful, in shades of pink.
If I have time and energy--or need another excuse to put off the laundry--I'll plant some crocus in the building garden, and wait to see about the rest.
