You will not remember enough of those hypnogogic thoughts. Keep paper in reach next to the bed and write them down.

In this case, I remember thinking of a new LJ title or subtitle idea. I remember thinking that I wouldn't remember it and should write it down. I didn't, and I don't.

I've seen pens with little built in lights, just for this purpose.

Maybe you tried this and it didn't work, but I can usually remember one exact quote or a simple narrative by rehearsing it over and over in my mind before letting myself fully wake up or go to sleep.
