Hospital billing departments are so routinely bad at billing insurance companies that the person at the collection agency was all set to take my insurance information and ended with "Okay, I'll take care of that." The annoying thing is that I expected this, because I've dealt with it before. I may or may not hear back from the hospital billing department, but at least their voice mailbox wasn't full this morning. I shouldn't be needing to pull out the insurance card for my old coverage (which ended in April of last year) to sort out payments for lab tests done in 2002.

Ye gods, and to think I've been complaining about the NHS. *smacks self* I mustn't do that. I must only complain about incompetent individuals, lest they take socialised medicine away from me altogether.

My father, who has been dead for almost ten years, and who was a hospital administrator by trade, always said that if hospital billing errors were simply human error, half of them would be in the patients' favor.
