Some more random Montreal-related thoughts

• Long-term unemployment can feel depressingly like not having accomplished anything in life.


• zorinth asks questions whose assumptions make me feel better about myself and the universe.


• This object really was made by humans, but that doesn't distinguish it from the rest of what's on my desk.


• Much as I like cider, drinking it with dinner two evenings in a row probably isn't wise, given how unused I am to alcohol.


• I'm still startled to be the oldest person in a group, though it's been a long time since I expected to routinely be the youngest.


• Yes, I like having purple hair, or I wouldn't have done it.

Put a rock on your desk. I put a salvaged-from-a-heap-of-prunings apple tree branch on mine just a couple hours ago, as a new home for the pile of bracelets that had been overflowing onto my mouse pads.

Half my life I was always the youngest -- what happens when you skip multiple grades in an otherwise rigidly-age-segregated system -- and proud of it. Then one week I went from a party where I was the youngest to a party where I was the oldest, and that was the end of that. However, for the last 20 years the online world has always seemed to me to have a big statistical bump of people right around my age (which is life, the universe and everything age, at least for a few more days), though I could just be imagining that.

I've had purple hair since 1995 -- a few times a year a stranger walks up to me with a remark like "so did you do that for <insert nearby holiday>?" and it kind of throws me for a second what they might be referring to.

Things not made by humans

Looking around a bit more thoroughly, there's a faceted piece of amethyst geode, and several shells, on a shelf where they're currently hidden by a loose agglomeration of birthday cards.

In the desk, I have a rather large number and variety of feathers.

On my desk, I have a very large crystal (not sure what kind it is, probably quartz), an interestingly round stone, another crystal in a wire pendant setting, and a large nut.
