apple: Swiss gourmet

We bought a few Swiss gourmet apples at the farmers market on Thursday, because adrian_turtle likes them, and I like trying new (or new-to-me) apples.

I tried one this afternoon. It was OK, but nothing special: crisp, moderately juicy, and tarter than I generally like. I thought cattitude might like it, because he likes tart apples, but his verdict is that there wasn't enough flavor there, though what there was, was good.

I'm going to leave the other two for Adrian, and eat Zestars; we bought some of those yesterday.

I have pink lady apples this week. I'm not sure how to qualitatively describe them. They are fine,but they are not my favorites.

Some of my apple notes are more detailed than others, including things like whether I liked an apple cattitude didn’t or vuce versa, and a couple I tried when we were living in Seattle are annotated to say that it might be worth trying the same varietal grown elsewhere. That was after I realized tthat the “same” apple grown in Washington would tase very different from one grown in New York.

If you look up apple varieties online, there’s a bunch of information aimed at people shopping for trees: what clmiate zones does it grow well in, disease resistance, when does it ripen, does it keep well in storage.

Our James Grieve tree gave us quite a crop for a young tree this year.

I grew up in the county of Kent so an apple is never just an apple! :o)
