The hygienist did a deep cleaning a couple of years ago, so the baseline is of a person who walked into the dentist with gum pain.
After that, I've been getting my teeth cleaned about every three months, and the hygienist has been applying a fluoride varnish at the end of every visit. It sounded as though she was giving the fluoride treatment at least some of the credit for that improvement.
Most dental insurance doesn't cover the fluoride treatment for adults. They have a sign on the wall, saying this and how much they charge for it, and the hygienist normally asks if I'm willing to pay for it. This time, I looked at the sign, and told her before she started that I was aware of the price increase, and I still wanted her the fluoride varnish.
None of my previous dentists had suggested that part of the treatment, and I didn't think of it, because I use fluoride toothpaste and have always lived in places with fluoridated water.
