The problem with tidying a bit at a time is that it can easily look like I haven't made any progress:

I cleared one area of my desk, dusted it, put a few things that belong there back, and made another pile for shredding. (This morning, I shredded everything that had piled up on the shredder in the last few months.)

Posting this mostly as a reminder that yes, I have made progress.

Inspiring me to tackle the piles of cardboard boxes that have grown in a few areas around here.

I actually managed to sell off a second book from my collections last week and disposed of one load of shredded paper as well in the recycle bins.

I would like to make more progress on these matters.

That's my biggest de-motivator, too. I don't have the energy to do the whole house at once, and seeing the part I've uncluttered get recluttered before I've even got to the next part is... Bleah.

I've mused about just going really slowly and thoroughly, one tiny section at a time, logging as I go so I don't lose track, and getting rid of things we don't use anymore. That might feel enough like progress to stay motivated.

Someone in my house enjoys shredding old papers, so they don't tend to pile up. I find that getting rid of things is crucial to having an encroaching wave of tidiness.

The whole “baby steps climb mountains, too” approach to tidying can be really frustrating, but with consistency and persistence it does make a difference.

Which is to say, I hear you. I’ve been doing a large amount of stuff-shuffling the last 2-3 months, with more to go. I’m not sure how long it will be until I can have a place that looks semi-tidy and livable.
