I recently learned about a delightful National Hockey League rule/position: emergency back-up goalie.

The NHL requires each team to have a backup goalie on call, in case either team needs him during a game. A few days ago, the Toronto Maple Leafs' Zamboni driver made his NHL debut and a lot of headlines, winning the game for North Carolina. The CBC notes that he was paid $500 "and gets to keep his jersey."

I know, right? Fun story, and he WON. Not many people can say that.

He also appeared on The Late Show (i.e., Colbert) last night, providing backup for Stephen Colbert and Jon Baptiste.

This rule is the source of a lot of heart-warming. A LOT.

It's an awesome rule. Not sure if my Sharks have ever had to use an emergency goalie. Considering how this season has gone for us, perhaps an emergency backup would have helped.
