It seems likely that Kaja is somewhere in the unfinished part of our basement (with the clothes washers and dryers, boilers, etc.): Yesterday [personal profile] cattitude put food and water there, as well as outside in the yard. The camera didn't function last night (I think a step was missed in turning it on), but the food in both places had been eaten this morning. We don't know what ate the food outside--it could have been Kaja, another cat, a raccoon or possum or skunk, almost anything that's active at night or in the early morning. But we don't think anything larger than a mouse could have gotten into the basement, and I don't think we have mice.

So, it seems likely that she's in the basement, and that she isn't crammed into a tiny crack, but has eaten and drunk recently.

The cat rescue person called this afternoon, and brought over a second camera and a second trap. We now have one camera pointed at each food bowl, and a trap a bit further away. (We're not setting the traps yet, this is so she gets used to seeing them.)

Also, optimistically, Cattitude put a large cardboard box near the food in the basement, with a pillowcase that smells a bit like him: Kaja's favorite toys are cardboard boxes and shoelaces, and it seems vaguely possible that she'll decide that box plus familiar smell equals safe.

Oh fingers crossed! I never worked out where my cat hid when I moved but luckily it was only a couple of hours. May she come out soon :)

Good luck! We had success with a cat trap set up with food and a familiar-smelling hoodie.
