I have a Herbert Hoover action figure. I have travelled on the Herbert Hoover Highway in Oregon. I have used the restroom at the Herbert Hoover presidential library. I am not as fascinated by Herbert Hoover as this set of facts might suggest, but I am intrigued by your email subject matter.
This was in response to a post at the Lowering the Bar blog, which included "one [Quaker] has even been elected president" before snarking about Richard Nixon." So I just pointed out Hoover, briefly, without going into anything else about his life, or that unlike Nixon he does seem to have stuck to Quaker principles.
The blogger was following up to an article about the many-times-amended and thus hard to read Massachusetts constitution, which had when written required elected officials to be Christian. He got email on that, from someone who hadn't realized that the First Amendment didn't apply to state governments until well after the Civil War, so this was about others of the original 13 states with similar requirements.
