more vegetables

umadoshi asked whether I'd gotten to the nursery yesterday (after I commented that her post of Sunday night made me want to):

I did, and spent the evening regretting it.

I bought and planted cherry tomatoes and cucumbers; they're in the front yard, and my knees didn't enjoy the amount of time I spent bending and kneeling, getting more weeds out and putting the plants in.

I'll be glad in August, I hope. The cucumbers are iffy, since we had mildew or something on the cucumbers last year. I wasn't going to plant any in the front yard this year, but there was only room for a few in the side bed. These are a resistant variety, but it's the same I had last year (Marketmore).

You will be glad in August, when you have lovely salad vegetables. Cucumbers can grow up a trellis, if yours got moldy from sitting on mulch or soil?

I may get a trellis for space reasons, but the mildew appears to be a thing that happens. The advice I got about that included that I could have pre-treated the soil with certain pesticides; planting a resistant variety (I had); and not planing cucumber or anything related in the same soil the next year. I wasn't going to put more cucumber there this year, just the few in the bed near the driveway, but we are very fond of cucumber, so I let myself be tempted.
