OK, next time I will clearly need to include "so don't call on the landline because I may be trying to nap" in any post about staying home sick because I'm exhausted. The ringing phone, and then the machine picking up, are likely to wake me, or stop me from falling asleep if I'm partway there. (However, the cell phone won't disturb me, and neither will IM or email: those are fine ways of asking if I want company, or need chicken soup, or have forgotten to return a library book.)

My upstairs neighbor just asked me if I needed an answering machine and it took me a while to explain what a landline is, why I don't have one, and how the machine wouldn't work with my cellphone. He is 88.
