I mostly think of what I do (bead and wirework) as craft: I do it as an occasional thing rather than a vocation, and I make things that are nice-looking but in general without a ton of imagination and with no message beyond "this looks cool". I think elisem (one of my frequent inspirations) would call it art nonetheless, but to me that term sounds somehow higher than what I do.
On the other hand, I'm pretty comfortable thinking of my poetry as an art, maybe because even in one that's not my best I'm saying something in a way no one has ever said it before.
I don't get that feeling when I make a pair of earrings, or when I knit a sweater or socks (except maybe the one time I invented a rowing sock pattern, which was quite complex and unique). I wonder how much of that is primarily because I'm much more verbal than visual?
