Do fairy godmothers get paid? (As above, but in fairy gold.)

That's something like what I was thinking, but on earth, godparents are part of a family or friendship system. I think you could get a pretty good story out of the idea of fairy godmothers for humans and human godmothers (mostly in the same family) for fairies.
