I have taken my podiatrist's advice and bought over-the-counter arch supports. These are Dr. Scholl's gel-filled ones. They sit against the heel of the shoe, and don't go all the way to the front. It feels, a few minutes after putting them in my shoes, as though I'm suddenly wearing half-inch heels: there's extra height from the heel through the arch, and then the front of my foot is at the same level it was this morning.
I won't know right away whether they're good, indifferent, or a Bad Idea. In the meantime, I'm saving the package and receipt, since the package offers a refund if I'm not completely satisfied.
If I need to claim the refund, I'll also be looking at other/different arch supports, and possibly custom orthotics.
