Meanwhile, the health insurance company's phone system consists of lots of buttons to push, interspersed with announcements and requests to continue holding.

Fortunately, one of those announcements was of a contact email address. So I have emailed them asking how to set up continuing health insurance under HIPAA. Now I get to find out whether they actually answer email.

Lots of luck. Count yourself fortunate if you get a response within a week. (It busts my gut, in both a Good Way and a Bad Way, when I hear some of these automated phone-answering systems that CLAIM that "my call is important to them" but then organize their menus in such a haphazard fashion that you'd sooner drill holes in your own skull than wade through them.)

My shrink, like my GP, knows the most essential medical skill of all: gaming the insurance biz. When my coverage changed (COBRA running out), he gave the Secret Phone Number to make sure he still was paid.
