A remarkable number of the editorial jobs being advertised require Quark knowledge/experience. I know lots of software, but not that. If anyone in/around New York City can get me some time on a Mac with Quark Xpress installed, it would be extremely useful. Obviously, I'd be glad to take on a temporary assignment--and I'm a good typist as well as having the editorial skills--but just the chance to come in and use your software after hours, or a spare machine during the day if you can arrange it, would be valuable.

I would also be grateful if anyone can put me in touch with people who are hiring editorial freelancers. If your contacts aren't giving you enough work even for yourself, I understand; in that case, more general hints, on things like how to locate and approach the appropriate people, would also be helpful.

Yesterday's poll was mostly to play with the LJ poll-making software, and the style owes something to [livejournal.com profile] sneerpout's polls and a bit to [livejournal.com profile] hobbitbabe's comments on a weird article about Tenzing Norgay.

You might also find it useful to download demo versions of QuarkXPress for either Mac or Windows (http://www.quark.com/support/downloads/downloadresults.jsp?descLanguage=0&pageCount=0&ProductTypeIdx=1&OSFamilyIdx=9999&FileTypeIdx=2&LanguageIdx=0&keywords=) from the Quark site, if you haven't done that already.

Remember, to a computer geek "I know X" means "I can learn X the weekend before I start work if I need to."

I think you could definitely figure out Quark in no time (it's fairly intuitive) but if you need any help or have questions, I would be happy to help. I have used Quark thoughout my fairly brief (8 years) but varied publishing career, and with any luck still retain a shred of useful knowledge about how to make it go... now, how to make a fire with just a marmoset and a scrap of wet toilet paper? That I could really help you with... ;)

I think they are downloadable as trial shareware from www.simiansurplus.com... :)

Nah... they release so many versions so quickly that you can pretty much just keep getting a trial marmoset for each. Though with the features that Marmoset 12.1.5 has, I may just have to pay up and finally get one of my very own.

Though if you're looking for real library functionality, I recommend Orangutan 4.6. :)

Pet my monkey? :)

If you have Pagemaker under your belt, you could learn Quark on the fly.
