I was having a fine workout, trying to mix things up a bit rather than do what I always do and in the usual order. I had just finished doing some vertical chest presses, when one of the trainers--one who I've always found pushy and annoying--came over to me and said something like "Wait a minute." I assumed he was going to suggest something specific about the exercise I'd just done: maybe I wasn't holding the handles quite right.
No. What he said was "I've never had the chance to tell you this, but you're so beautiful."
I told him this was inappropriate. He said "I'm sorry if I've offended you." [1] I explained that I wasn't offended, but he was overstepping boundaries. He apologized again and walked away.
I then walked over to a trainer I actively like, Elliott, and asked him for the other guy's name. (I'd heard him offer to take a phone message for Annoying Guy, so I asked him for the name of the guy he'd just taken a message for.) I wrote it down--Lee Woods--and went looking around for a manager. Not finding one right away, I continued my workout.
A bit later, I saw someone walk into the office labeled "General Manager," so I went over and asked whether he was, in fact, the manager. He said yes, and I described the incident to him. I mentioned that I'd found this trainer to be intruding on my personal space when he started working there, but I'd told him to back off, and he had. Until today. The manager asked for the trainer's name, wrote it down, and said he'd talk to him. He also said that Lee was "very friendly" and that he didn't think it was malicious. I said I knew that, but it made me uncomfortable. The manager thanked me for letting him know.
With any luck, that will be the end of that. I think I handled it well.
