(as [livejournal.com profile] rysmiel and I have been, lately): New York City took another hit to our infrastructure over the weekend, and it's going to make my life less comfortable for an unknown time. Quite possibly the next few years.

There was a fire in a subway signal room. Result: one train line (the C, 8th Avenue/Fulton Street local) out of service altogether, and another, the A--my usual train--running far fewer trains than usual and making some extra stops to make up for the absence of the C.

If this takes as long to fix as they're saying it may, I assume they'll fiddle with the lines/routes/map again. If it were me, I'd start by running the non-rush-hour B trains to 168th instead of 145th. They may also fix it faster than they're predicting: one of the more positive things we learned after 9/11 was how (relatively) quickly they could get the trains back to normal. In the meantime, I'll be standing on trains more, and spending slightly more time on my commute.
