I've had a pleasant afternoon with my mother, and to some extent my aunt Lea and her husband (and a little bit her mother-in-law, who lives with them). Mom is, as usual, staying at Lea's while she's in New York. It's about ten days here in the city (plus another week or so in two other parts of the U.S.), long enough that [livejournal.com profile] cattitude and I had dinner with her on Wednesday and there was this afternoon. [Knowing I had plans with Mom helped me resist the anyhow-unwise urge to dash up to Boston this weekend.] We walked, we talked about this and that, we drank tea, and Lea showed us the pictures from her recent trip to Nova Scotia, with (by request) enough narrative to make them interesting. By itself, a snapshot of a lighthouse is no big deal, but it fits well with my aunt talking about a week in Nova Scotia. They also talked some about family weddings I'm not really interested in (the topic came up because my aunt decided she could use a new dress, and got Mom to take her shopping; my aunt apparently makes me look like an enthusiastic clothing shopper).

Mom's health is basically good, though she was dismayed to discover after the fact that while the cataract surgery has the positive effect that she no longer needs glasses for driving, she now needs them for reading.

I apparently am not quite over this cold, as I had a recurrence of the sinus headache late in the afternoon; herb tea helped briefly, and ibuprofen not at all, but some combination of decongestant and fresh air have done the trick.

Mom and I are going to have lunch on Tuesday, because she really wants to try Excellent Dumpling, the place in Chinatown I go to periodically because I don't have a decent Chinese restaurant convenient to the office on foot (and this one is right near the Canal Street station of the 6 train).
