redbird: closeup of me drinking tea, in a friend's kitchen (Default)

My methods of handling the heat include walking into the air conditioning periodically, and drinking cold things.

My computer, lacking these options, seems to be good for about half an hour in these conditions; then it just hangs. I'd be happier if it shut itself down, rather than sitting there, hot, and expecting me to.

I'm typing this on [livejournal.com profile] cattitude's machine, which seems to be more resilient (perhaps connected to its relative youth), but doesn't (of course) have my bookmarks, saved email, or other files. I can look at any Website I can remember or easily find the URL of (Cattitude mostly uses Linux, and keeps his bookmarks there, but I don't have a login on that part of the machine, so I've booted into Windows instead).

The Museum of Natural History was not a great way of handling the heat, because I spent too much time on my feet. The St. Agnes branch of the New York Public Library was better. I sat there a while and enjoyed their air conditioning while reading part of A. N. Wilson's history of London. It's sketchy, not just because it's brief but because the chapters jump from one historical era to the next with little continuity. I was left with the strong feeling that the author was trying to make some kind of point, but no clear idea of what it was, nor sufficient interest in finding out to check out the book and finish it later.
