I got up a half hour later than
cattitude, but headed out when he did--this made my morning a bit hurried. I did find time to send
wild_irises email, asking what was going on with my apa membership--I'd emailed a six-page zine in plenty of time, but it appears not to have arrived, and she thinks I've minacked out. If I don't hear back tomorrow, I'm going to pick up the phone: if her system is treating mine as spam, the second message won't get through either.
I had a nice, thorough workout, getting the cardio back up (in terms of both duration and maximum heart rate) and doing lots of cool stuff with the weights. Lunch in Chinatown, the usual place on what seemed a particularly crowded day. Then I went out to Brooklyn, to restock on dried fruit and bulk spices at Sahadi.
As it happens, there's now a Ben and Jerry's between Sahadi's and Damascus Bakery, and it was Free Cone Day. I got in line after I'd bought my groceries; the wait was noteworthy only for the person who looked at the line and asked me [1] "Are they giving away free ice cream?" I said "Yes," and he continued on his way--I'm not sure if he'd been joking. I tried a new flavor, "Turtle Soup"--it's vanilla ice cream with caramel swirl and chocolate-coated cashews. I was not impressed, and probably wouldn't have been even if large amounts of my ice cream hadn't landed on the sidewalk, some of it before I started eating: the flavors don't fit together particularly well. But one of the things I use freebies for is to try things I'm not sure I'll like enough to buy, and it wasn't horrid, just unimpressive; I'd rather have had plain vanilla, or Cherry Garcia.
My next stop was an hour or so talking to
rezendi over coffee (him) and tea (me): we talked about those beverages, cities, books, writing, exercise, and probably a few other things. (This happened to be a chunk of time that he had free, in a rather busily-scheduled visit to New York; usually I see him in Montreal, and with a bit of luck he'll be there rather than in some random other country when I next go north.) It was nice to sit down with just him; usually we're two of a half dozen or more over dim sum, which doesn't lend itself to quiet conversation. This seemed much smoother, and a much better use of time, than the last sit down across a table with someone from out of town--but I already knew that I had things to talk about with
rezendi.
From there, I went to a doctor's appointment (routine, complete with an ordinary amount of time sitting in a waiting room reading), and then met
cattitude for an early supper. We'd had nothing specific in mind, only a fallback of Tea Den (Chinese food, near Columbus Circle). We wound up in a place called Momo Sushi, which was unimpressive, and included one piece of fish that I spit out because it tasted wrong. (I asked Cattitude to sniff it, and he smelled nothing off--I obviously wasn't going to ask him to taste it.) Cattitude said, afterwards, that even run-of-the-mill sushi is still sushi; I'm not so sure, but I'd gotten the suspect piece, and I think I'd had good sushi more recently than he had (at Kashima, a couple of weeks ago).
Tomorrow will be less busy.
