I called early this morning, and the physical therapist's office said that they hadn't gotten my new insurance referral, but I should come in anyway. Larry (the main PT) feels strongly about treating people who need treatment, and doesn't much care for insurance companies and their policies. (In this case, though, I suspect the problem is at my GP's office. I need to call them again.)

He said my muscles were a bit tighter today; I may have either overused my arm this weekend, or just be dealing with insufficient exercise and the discomfort of long bus trips.

We skipped the resistance exercise, because I didn't want Larry (or anyone) touching my right index finger while I've got a nail that is attached by one edge, and pasted down by a bandage until it comes loose on its own rather than being torn off. The bandage is also to protect the finger underneath, and I'll be bandaging it after the fingernail comes off, as well. (With cloth--Larry confirmed [livejournal.com profile] papersky's advice to use cloth instead of plastic.)

I have an appointment for next Wednesday: I asked about moving back to Saturdays, but Apu, who had been doing Saturdays, won't be anymore, and the new physical therapist he's hired for Saturdays isn't starting for a couple of weeks.

According to the BBC and other news sources, the CIA is starting a probe to find out who leaked charges that they are running a system of secret prisons where people are tortured.

Either I'm missing something, or this is the CIA's way of saying "We're not allowed to say so publicly, but this is true." If it isn't true, there was nothing to leak and no classified information involved. If I wrote an article saying "The CIA is run by Martians from inside the Hollow Earth," they might refer me to a psychiatrist, but they wouldn't be asking who told me.

[Trying to be amused instead of, or as well as, disgusted]

OK. So, the bigoted portion of the Texas electorate, working with the illiterate portion of the State Legislature [about which, see Molly Ivins, passim], has eliminated civil marriage in Texas. That's pretty clear: A is A, marriage is identical to marriage, and the amendment says that Texas may not recognize anything "similar or identical to marriage".

Who will file suit demanding that Texas stop issuing marriage licenses, or doing any of the other things that a state does based on marriage, is an interesting question.

But what I'm wondering is, while we know what "identical" means, what counts as "similar" in this context? A Vermont civil union, almost certainly--that's what it's aimed at, after all. Domestic partnership, ditto. But what about, oh, the legal document someone I knew drew up, years ago, designating his best friend as his legal next of kin? They weren't lovers--Richard just wanted someone he trusted to make legal and medical decisions if he wasn't capable of doing so. A will that designates someone other than a blood relative as guardian for a minor child? Joint ownership of a house?

There's money in this for lawyers, sure enough.

  • I installed Firefox, after checking with the conveniently located (Mac) tech support guy that he didn't think anyone would mind.

  • I rephrased an exercise to make it clear that the Jim Crow laws didn't merely allow racial segregation, they required it.

  • I read most of the Stamp Act. (Google is my friend.)

  • I iced my shoulder and did my stretches.

  • I may have eaten too much chocolate.
