There are always many things going on in the world, good and bad. We cannot put our own lives aside until all of them are resolved, or we will have no lives of our own.

That doesn't mean you should never take the time--whether it's an hour to give blood or years working as a nurse or in the military--to address the larger problems. Rather, it means that when you aren't doing that, it is legitimate and proper to think about small joys and large, about your loved ones and the taste of a fresh orange.

  • A coworker's daughter recently had gall bladder surgery, and can't wear clothes that press on her stomach at all while she's healing. So I went through my closet and pulled out a couple of dresses that are supported entirely at the shoulders. If they fit her, great, they can use a new home. If not, my coworker will give them back to me.

  • On the way to the subway this morning, [livejournal.com profile] cattitude spotted an eagle. It was just riding the thermals, and circled slowly east until it was over Isham Park rather than Inwood Hill Park, probably taking advantage of the heat put off by Seaman Avenue on the way.

  • My insurance company sent a letter saying that they are, in fact, paying for an MRI some months ago that they were making a fuss about for stupid "we lost track of your paperwork" reasons. Separately, my GP got three more physical therapy sessions approved.
