I've just spent some time going through my closet, getting rid of things that should have gone long ago (because they're torn and I won't ever get them mended); trying on things I haven't worn in a while; and discarding some on the grounds that I just don't like them. The pleasant surprises include that I am better supplied with summer-weight pants than I realized, including a couple of pairs of jeans I'd forgotten (though one is probably near the end of its natural lifespan) and a rather nice green silk shirt I have no memory of ever seeing before. Finding that reminded me of
xiphias's post on the benefits of disorganization.
As I was going, I made three piles: keep, discard, and "belongs to
cattitude. The "keep" pile was actually a mix of "yes, this fits and I want it" and "I can't bear to try this on in this weather" (I'll find out later which, if any, of my flannel shirts still fit). The "discard" was a mix of "this goes in the trash" and "someone else might want this", the latter including things that don't fit and one or two that I'm not sure why I bought (a perfectly decent light-yellow oxford shirt, for example). Following
nellorat's example, I put the "don't quite fit" stuff--mostly pants--on the "give away" pile, on the theory that it didn't quite fit last month, and six months ago, and it won't quite fit next month and next year. It's annoying how many things I can technically get into, whose waists are painfully tight. Also annoying to have found three pairs of trousers that seem to be designed on the assumption that fat women have relatively thin legs: two are clearly too tight in the calves and one is okay until I move, at which point the thighs are too tight.
The giveaway pile, such as it is, is mostly size 18 trousers and size 16 shirts; mostly about a 28-inch inseam, though there's one pair of drawstring pants that are clearly cut for someone taller. Wave if you're local and interested; I may or may not put unclaimed things on Freecycle or take them to Goodwill, depending on my energy levels and what else I need to do. For these purposes, "interested" means that you have a use for them; if you're thinking patchwork quilts, or your best friend in Nebraska, that's fine, but you get to do the cutting or shipping.
I'm about halfway through this, with a note that I need to go through dresser drawers when I finish with the closet.
P.S. Cattitude, there's a rather nice white silk shirt that I think may be yours, but it fits me.
