It occurred to me, lying in bed last night, that I might be eligible for unemployment insurance: I'd only worked two months at McGraw-Hill, but all those months at PCH might also count toward qualifying.
It transpires, after some time on the state Dept. of Labor Web site and some more on the phone with a helpful woman who works there, that they do, and I am. So I have faxed her my most recent pay stub, and can claim starting next week. I wish I'd thought of this a few days earlier, but so it goes.
I also have invoiced for the few hours of freelance proofreading I did over the last few weeks.
Next up, tax forms.
Also, continued job hunting, freelance copyediting, and exciting things like cooking dinner. But the things above all feel like the same kind of thing: paperwork related to money.
