redbird: closeup of me drinking tea, in a friend's kitchen (Default)

I got to the gym this morning, for the first time in a week and a half. I've had better workouts--had to reduce the weight or number of repetitions on some things, and rearrange stuff to be gentle on my left wrist--but it was a workout, and if I get back in a day or two I can do more.

Then I went down to Chinatown. Lunch was good, as usual; Canal Street was crowded, also as usual; and there wasn't a box of clementines to be seen anywhere. Not being foolish or desperate enough to risk Fairway on the Saturday before Christmas, I'll wait a couple of days. We have apples, a dozen Macouns bought at the last Inwood Greenmarket of the season.

I usually skip memes, but this one amuses me. Via [livejournal.com profile] angevin2:

Destructions:
1. Take five (random!) books off your bookshelf. (I grabbed the top six of a stack, and eliminated the second one by the same author, to add variety.)
2. Book #1 -- first sentence
3. Book #2 -- last sentence on page fifty
4. Book #3 -- second sentence on page one hundred
5. Book #4 -- next to the last sentence on page one hundred fifty
6. Book #5 -- final sentence of the book
7. Make the five sentences into a paragraph

"I once played Romeo and Juliet as a one-man show," I said. Shouldn't eat before going to bed—knew better. There's a good chance they could die because of what we're going to do. He helped defeat the capital-move initiatives of 1960 and 1962. He's about to fall asleep in his plate.

The five books, in order, are:
The Golden Globe, by John Varley
The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag, by Robert A. Heinlein
Facets, by Walter Jon Williams
Coming Into The Country, by John MacPhee
The Withdrawing Room, by Charlotte MacLeod
