redbird: closeup of me drinking tea, in a friend's kitchen (Default)

I had dinner last night with [livejournal.com profile] rivka and [livejournal.com profile] curiousangel, who visited New York for the day with their Spanish exchange student, Maria; [livejournal.com profile] cattitude, [livejournal.com profile] roadnotes, and [livejournal.com profile] baldanders. We went to Trattoria Spaghetto, which they were very pleased by, and talked for a couple of hours over antipasto, various pasta dishes, and then dessert. Cattitude had spent the afternoon wandering around town with them--it was the 12-hour tourist New York, counting dinner--and they were all happily tired. It was good to see Rivka and Misha again; Maria was very quiet, I think both because she was quite tired and because her English isn't very good yet and it didn't occur to me or Roadnotes to mention that we know Spanish until Cattitude and I were on the subway with them back to where the bus left from.

Other than that, I had a very quiet day, on purpose--usually I exercise on Saturday and go thud on Sunday, but this week I needed to go thud early. I emailed a bit of copyediting (the author had told the managing editor, but not me, that she was happy with the edited galleys), and an invoice for that and the other MS I'd done for Diane thus far, and otherwise just futzed around, put away laundry, and played with LJ.

The other cool thing yesterday was that we got to the new Greenmarket [local farmer's market] in the neighborhood in good time yesterday morning. We had sweet corn (three ears each) for lunch yesterday. A blackberry pie. Ginger apple cider--we got that from a farmer who's been bringing plain apple, and apple raspberry, to Union Square for years, and commented that she likes Inwood, and liked seeing people she recognized from Union Square. I was surprised, given the amount of business they do, and thus the number of people they must see there, to be recognized. Two pounds of really ripe cherries--I just had some with my morning yogurt. Yum. And some organic yogurt, to try, because it was cheaper than the Dannon at the supermarket (quarts of plain whole milk yogurt, in each case).

We also tasted some meatloaf from an organic meat vendor, and may buy from them next week--but with a dodgy refrigerator and plans to go out that night, we weren't buying meat yesterday. And so many other things--lettuces, green beans, berries....

[This post is intended mostly as a heads-up to [livejournal.com profile] rivka, [livejournal.com profile] curiousangel, [livejournal.com profile] roadnotes, and [livejournal.com profile] baldanders.]

I seem to be coming down with have suddenly come down with a head cold, of the sneezing-every-30-seconds variety (no sore throat, maybe a little headache). This hit about 90 minutes ago, just soon enough that I decided that I wasn't going to be cooking tonight (for reasons partly of hygiene and partly of sudden lack of enthusiasm). If it's like this in the morning, I'm staying home, lack of sick pay or no. Even if it's not, I'm punting the gym for another day or two.

ETA: No maybe on the headache. I have had dinner (courtesy of Kismat, including mulligatawny soup) and two aspirin.
