I slept a bit late, to make up for being up a bit in the night (I'm getting really tired of this, but in this case it was mostly from cold, and I did once better after I put on my flannel pajamas and got the cat to stretch out on top of me). I got to [livejournal.com profile] quility's office a little after 11, and spent a couple of hours proofreading database stuff (paid work, a good thing). I also stopped in at [livejournal.com profile] porcinea's, but didn't stay long because she had a headache. Thence to the Greenmarket, where I got Gala apples, peaches, sweet potatoes, aji dulce peppers as recommended by [livejournal.com profile] jonsinger, and a cup of hot cider. Now I just have to figure out what to do with the peppers.

My contact on the possible proofreading job says that the person who decides had been away, is now back, and is looking at my resume (and, I infer, possibly others, whether from her or from elsewhere). If all goes well, I'll get a proofreading test tomorrow, return it Friday, and talk to them in person early next week. She also said she'll keep me in mind if they get any very short-term things right now, since she knows I'm basically available to work for the next few days.

I'm not enjoying the waiting, especially as it may mess up other plans, but I'm still hopeful that I'll get this assignment; I think Jennifer would/will tell me if they decide I'm not what they're looking for, or that they can't afford a proofreader at all.

Someone over on alt.poly is calling various people who have been disagreeing with her and asking her to share the responsibility for writing understandably (rather than demanding that we read her mind instead of her words) "over-educated". I can't possibly be over-educated: I don't understand quantum mechanics, know almost no African history, and don't know Swahili or Chinese or any of the language of Papua New Guinea. I've never read Proust or Milton, and I don't know the infield-fly rule or how to knit a sweater.

How can anyone since Gutenberg be over-educated, when there's so much to know and so little time to learn it all?

Edit: I strongly recommend the discussion in [livejournal.com profile] wild_irises' journal that grew out of this: http://www.livejournal.com/users/wild_irises/3407.html?view=19791#t19791

The front-page headline on today's Newday is "Criminal Probe of White House", in large friendly capital letters.
