My right shoulder was sore last night. I took aspirin, and eventually went to sleep.

This morning, half-awake, I turned over on my right side. Bad Idea. Sharp pain. I got out of bed, carefully; took two aspirin, carefully; made a big cup of tea, also carefully; and am now hoping the aspirin do some good soon.

I was coming home Wednesday night, waiting for an A train at Columbus Circle, and walked past the newsstand. One of the headlines read "Somos #1". I automatically translated that ("We're number one") and thought "Cool, what have we done now?" A closer look, and I saw an outline of the contiguous US and the additional text "37,000,000". It was the latest census data, that Hispanics are now the largest minority in the US. (I'd seen the story in my English-language paper.)

Suddenly, the context had slipped, and the "we" didn't include me. On first glance, I'd assumed that "we" was New York.

It's been way below freezing here for several days, and with wind chills that had them issuing warnings. While that's mostly a nuisance (when the Hudson starts to freeze, you don't get ice skating, you get problems with the ferry services), I found a silver lining.

Our freezer needed defrosting. Rather than buy or make lots of ice and pile it in the sink on top of the frozen broth, berries, and so on, I just took the contents of the freezer and put them on the fire escape. A couple of hours and several reheatings of a pot of water (to speed the process) later, the last piece of ice came off the freezer wall. [livejournal.com profile] cattitude wiped everything dry, pulled the stuff inside, and we were all set, one nice unfrosted freezer, stocked with a variety of good food.

(Yes, this was the main event of my day. Yesterday's was a trip to LinuxWorld, which proved both small and disappointing; I did get a nice thermos mug, but it would have been simpler to buy one up here than go down to 34th Street and get it free.)
