I just heard from Rafiq. The freelance writing work I'd more or less given up on has come through; since it's now on a tighter schedule, he's assigning fewer pages per person (which seems entirely sensible to me). I've written back to say I'm still interested, and know someone else who is if he needs more writers. (B expressed strong interest when I told her about this project a few weeks ago.)
Now I wait to find out which chunks of world history I'm working on--we'd sorted out an assignment on the assumption of two writers, and me doing 80-100 pages, instead of 50.
Given a laptop--and I have been given a laptop--this job should be eminently mobile. New Year's in Montreal suddenly looks a lot more feasible.
More important, I can relax a bit about work/income/etc., which is particularly good considering that this isn't a great time of year to be looking for work.
