I decided to indulge myself and bought a package of those tiny, delicious rib lamb chops. For about $5, which is a lot for a smallish meat course for two, but cheap for an indulgent dinner.

So, lamb chops grilled (okay, fried) with garlic and rosemary. Macaroni with butter and grated cheese. Some of those little pre-peeled carrots, a vegetable course I didn't have to time, because I'm way out of practice on chops, and didn't know how long they'd take.

We were happy animals, all of us.

And then I took the bones and the bits of fat from the chops, put them in a saucepan with half an onion, a piece of celery, and a few spices, and simmered for an hour or so.

I now have a cup of lamb broth sitting in the freezer, waiting for the next cooking adventure.

Old tech, new tech, none of it is behaving.

Old: we have no hot water. There's a sign up in the lobby about emergency repairs, which at least tells me they're aware of it, but that doesn't get me a hot shower, or clean spoons. Or heat, for that matter: the problem is the boiler, not the pipes. At least the stove works, so I have tea, while the mugs hold out.

New: Someone I met Sunday gave me her card, because there may be job openings at her company. I sent email a few hours ago, saying hi and where should I send a resume. It bounced back, Panix reporting "unable to relay" and "user unknown." Will try again later, or maybe ask Vijay or Soren to forward a note.

Water hot is a noble thing.

I have had a shower, the dishwasher is running, and the radiators steam merrily along.
