R.I.P. Damon Knight: http://boingboing.net/2002_04_01_archive.html#85007819

I never met Damon, in person that is. I read his fiction, and we were both on the GEnie SF Roundtable way back when.

He was 80. It's still a shock.

I had to write the IRS a check for just over a thousand dollars today. Some of that, I think, is that they only took out 10% on the unemployment insurance. I have the thousand dollars, but that's a lot of money, especially with me underemployed and Andy unemployed. (At first he'd thought we'd be getting a refund, before he really looked at anything. This is why we filed today, not six weeks ago.)

It was disconcerting to discover I had exactly one charitable contribution last year; there should be more, but that's going to have to wait until I have a regular income. Yes, I've started getting paid for the current proofreading/indexing/whatever-it-is project, and they have work for me tomorrow (page proofs), but it's not full-time or reliable, and comes with no benefits.

And it's supposed to be close to 90 degrees tomorrow. I wonder how far I will push their "office casual".
