Birthdays are much easier when the person knows what they want.

Yesterday, I got to go shopping with Ellie, so she could have cheese for a train trip, and I could get Andy Civ III for his birthday, and we could talk and wander around a bit. It had to be a slightly belated birthday gift, because the game wasn't out on his birthday, but he was and is very happy with it. Short on sleep, but quite pleased. So that was all right, oh best beloved.

We also wound up with t-shirts, cider, and Halloween candy. I have leftover candy, but that probably has to do with not being open for trick-or-treaters until almost 6 p.m. And there are worse things than extra chocolate.

Meanwhile, an offhand remark on rassef seems to have given me not only a possible book project, but a collaborator and numerous other people who are happy to make suggestions or who want to be included. I'm inclined, at the moment, to stick to just me and James, in the interests of easier organization and the vague hope that it will be possible, if we find a publisher, to define rights and a contract.

And having something to work on should help a bit with the out-of-work blues, which aren't just "nobody loves me" but lack of structure and meaningful work beyond watering the snapdragons and taking out accumulated catalogs.

The snapdragons are a delight: November 1st, and bright new flowers. The only thing is, I'm wondering when I'm going to plant crocuses and such. Maybe put them elsewhere, and not worry about the bit of earth with snapdragons: I don't have to have early Spring flowers there, not if it'll cost me the late Fall flowers that are here and now, not subject to the vicissitudes of weather and squirrels.

Do the people who pick names for tropical storms think about surrealism?

At the moment, off in the middle of nowhere in the Pacific Ocean, is Hurricane Octave.
