redbird: closeup of me drinking tea, in a friend's kitchen (Default)

There's a photo over on the Yahoo news page, taken a few hours ago. The Manhattan skyline, with the Brooklyn Bridge in the foreground, and the shining towers behind. The caption talks about the smoke hanging low, but the effect is of light clouds. I know that there's something large missing--but I can't tell where it was. What I see is a beautiful, bright city, one of the great works of human civilization, and it looks strong and whole, like a jewel.

And I know we will survive, and go on.

My isp, panix.com, has apparently lost all or almost all of its NYC dial-up and DSL lines, with no estimate of when they'll get them back--the ones that weren't actually through the World Trade Center are in a building that's been evacuated.

So we can get in by telnet, if we have access through another system--I'm piggybacking on Andy's Bell Atlantic DSL line. That gets me shell access, which in theory covers just about everything--but I'm not used to doing Usenet that way, and not sure I want to deal with unfamiliar software that won't know which messages I've read. It's also willing to give me Netscape and ICQ, so I'm not out of touch.

just chatting with Laurel on ICQ. She mentioned that she's going to dinner and a movie with her parents, and I found myself saying that if my mother lived someplace I could get to right now, I'd be tempted. But I suspect it is literally impossible for me to go to London right now.

I was there six weeks ago.

Mom will be here in November.

And we talked this morning.

But it's weird knowing that I can't go see her right now.

I'm being quoted online, in Italian. (The translator is an online friend, a nice person, who I met at Jo and Emmet's wedding.): http://www.corriere.fantascienza.com/ (That's the front page, probably will fade back with tiime; the posts are all from rec.arts.sf.fandom, yesterday.) So far, I still agree with what I said.
