I don't even know why it hurts so much.

I hadn't spent a lot of time with my grandmother in the last few years. No great chasm between us, just lack of current connection and problems with her short-term memory that made conversation difficult.

But it does. There's a gap there, some connection or symbol she meant for me that I hadn't noticed until it was gone.

You don't miss the water till the well runs dry.
