I went to the gym on my lunch hour today, instead. This isn't as good, because time is limited, but it's better than not going. They seem to be doing some kind of remodeling--the pool is closed for painting, and a number of the exercise machines were out of place. I did a chunk of my semi-usual routine, mostly involving weight machines of one sort or another.
There were signs up informing me that this particular club would be closed for Christmas. I asked, and they think all the branches are closed that day. I know people like the day off, but I also know there are a few million New Yorkers who aren't Christian and don't celebrate December 25th except maybe as the day when the madness ends and it's possible to buy a book or a new sweater without a struggle. Couldn't they have found staffers willing to trade the day, and had a few clubs open for people who aren't celebrating, or who don't find a workout inconsistent with whichever aspects of the holiday they do celebrate?
It's hard enough keeping to a schedule of good intentions when nobody puts obstacles in my way. Once I'm at the gym, it's fine--but that doesn't mean I find it easy to get myself there.
