There were only a few of us at the work weekend:
womzilla picked me up in the early afternoon, and we drove up to Pleasantville. The only other guest was Carol WINOLJ, who had to leave in the late afternoon to go to a concert. Fortunately, people who weren't there had done a lot of manuscript reading on previous weekends and Wednesdays, so there was plenty to go into the issue. I read/edited everything I hadn't already looked at, and took a short break to rant that "I know it's interesting, but if I'm the fourth person to go through this MS, I shouldn't be catching all the little typos for the first time." The MS that prompted this was a book review by
peake (for those playing along in Kent, it's the one that begins "Sadistic amorality never goes out of style"). It didn't need much editing, but no typist is perfect, and there were several small errors, none of which the previous readers had marked. Had this been the first occasion, I'd probably have said nothing, but this has happened before: as far as I can tell, the only other person on the magazine with a strong copyeditor's/proofreader's eye is
supergee, and he was otherwise busy yesterday. Carol and I will never see eye to eye on commas, which I could accept with more grace if she had a better eye for omitted words and typos. </rant>
Other than finding typos and discussing books and literary criticism, I spent some time stroking the cat, Belinda (who spent more time than usual curled on her bed under the television); we discussed Kathryn's Weblog, which led to gossip/bitching about idiot right-wing comment spammers and then about a few shared acquaintances whose names will not pollute this LJ. Eventually we took a break from fixing (that is, entering corrections on the computer) and went to the usual place for dinner. David's older son and his girlfriend, both friendly long-haired people, met us there. I had chirashi, instead of my usual Chinese food, which for some bizarre reason was served in two separate bowls, most of the fish in one, and the surimi, tamago, lots of oshinko (most of which I brought home for
cattitude), and rice in another. The fish was decent, but if I'd wanted sashimi and rice separately, I'd have ordered that.
Then back to Kathryn and David's house, where they dealt with small children further, and Womzilla and I finished fixing. I then retired to the living room couch with a book while Womzilla and David did layout, and then Womzilla drove me home. I got back about 1:30 a.m., which seems to be par for the course, but combined with the move to Daylight Saving Time to mean that I'm sitting here still working on my second cup of tea at 11:15, rather than at the gym.
